– Workshops were a mixed bag. Highlights included Mike Carnohan’s AASC Online workshop, ethics workshops, other types of SC models for family housing and alternate funding structures, creation of resident volunteer program workshop, safety in the workplace, death and dying in apartment buildings.
– It was nice to meet fellow SCs from across the country. Feels less isolating to know other SCs are out there.
– Diane, Alexa, Stacey and Matt have workshop presentations that fellow SCs can get access to.
3. Client Scenarios
a. How do we service a member who has a husband who has legal guardianship? What is the confidentiality protocol and what documentation is necessary to provide services (consent to release form?) SC has not had access to wife; wife is apartment bound. – Victoria.
i. Has there been an apartment inspection?
ii. There is a visiting nurse.
iii. His signature is adequate. Sign with his name and write “guardian for x” afterwards. Keep copy of guardianship form in files.

v. Address in a nice way that SC has noticed that husband is putting up barriers to a home visit. Explore this with him.
vi. Is husband afraid that wife needs so many services that she will be ineligible to live in co-op.
vii. SC has presented need for a home visit for services such as PACE.
viii. Give timeframe of ADL Assessment within month of starting services.
4. Documentation
a. What counts as an SC service to prevent eviction? I learned from a member that if a member has their electric disconnected for 10 days, that’s grounds for an eviction? What else counts? – Karen
i. Lease infractions; violations of house rules (read lease and house rules associated with your building or co-op)
ii. Obscene language
iii. Bullying
iv. Hoarding
v. Disturbances created by family members (member does have the right to bar people from building)
b. What is a community client? – Jim
i. 60+ and older (must come to SC office or be serviced via phone)
ii. For the co-ops, the community client can be under 60 if they are a registered guest staying in the co-op for no longer than 30 days (and registered with the floor rep). This may differ slightly from co-op to co-op, so you should read about this in your House Rules.
c. How service logs are maintained in hard files. – Lindsay
i. The SL associated with your Initial Service Plan and Updated Service Plan needs to be maintained in the hard files. Other SLs are optional.

CSI Guest Policy

It came up that there is confusion around who is an approved guest in a Co-op that SCs are able to provide services to as a Community Client. Here is the information from Sheila:

The House Rules state the guest rule policy for each of the co-ops, there may be a difference in the amount of time. The SC needs to read the policy to be accurate on the time allowed. The member needs to talk with the floor rep so they can keep a record of the overnight guest(s). HUD does not want guests to be there for an undetermined amount of time because the rent is based on who is on the lease. If they are using lights, laundry room, etc. the co-op is not getting the money to cover these extra charges from the rent.

Sheila Crayne Friedrich

Note from Rachel – The “norm” is up to 30 days, but please read your House Rules to confirm for your own Co-op.

New & Future AASC Online Features

Per Mike at Pangea,

We now have the ability to select multiple health conditions at once on the ADL form.

In order to utilize this new feature, you simply need to press (and hold) the CTRL button while you click on each complication you want to select.  When you are done selecting your last complication, you can release the CTRL button.

I have also put in a request to allow for a day selection when printing progress notes.  Currently, you can only print one progress at a time or a complete month’s worth.  This creates a lot of wasted paper.  Mike and his team are working on adding this feature “in the near future”.

Jim

How to report unsafe drivers

If you know someone in your building is still driving who perhaps should not be, you can fill out an OC-88 form and submit it to the Secretary of State’s office. The person will then have to be re-examined to see whether it is still safe for them to drive. More information and a link to the form: http://www.michigan.gov/sos/0,1607,7-127-1627_8665_9066-23762–,00.html

Get to know Diane Crawford: Service Coordinator at LaBelle Towers Co-Op

Name – Diane Crawford

Hired date – April 23, 2012

Name and Location of Building: Labelle Towers Co-op

Diane Crawford is a lifelong eastside Detroiter, who grew up in her beloved Brewster Projects, graduating from Northeastern High School and today lives in the Lafayette Towers area.  She considers trips to the Eastern Market as one of her rituals and Belle Isle as her playground.

Diane is a proud Spartan, having attended Michigan State University as an undergrad, majoring in History and English.  She continued her education and attained her MSW from Wayne State University.  Diane earned her PhD in Human Services from Walden University.

Diane grew up with 2 older sisters. Her father worked at the Ford Motor Company and  her mother worked for the Aladdin Coverall Company in Highland Park, Michigan. She developed a fondness for working with seniors while running errands for her grandmother and other seniors in her youth.  She sees this as a form of community service and has always given back.

After 32 years with the Detroit Public Schools (DPS), Diane retired as a teacher and school social worker. Diane loves to dance and listen to Motown, Contemporary, and Jazz music. She has been to 9 countries in Africa, Paris, and Brazil. When relaxing, she enjoys watching movies. Her favorite movie to watch is the Godfather.

While she has been a mentor to many young people throughout the years, Diane has two great nieces that are the loves of her life, Saniya 9 and Zariya.6.  She tries to spend as much time with them as possible, teaching them the same lessons she learned when she was their age.
