Fraud Educational Workshop

Our MMAP program is very involved in educating the community on Medicare and Medicaid. Within our program, we also have Fraud specialists who are part of The Senior Medicare Patrol (SMP) program.

MMAP/SMP is hosting an educational workshop for management and service coordinators of senior housing in southeastern MI. This event will be held on January 22, 2013 at Laurel Manor in Livonia.

It is our goal to inform all senior housing management and service coordinators of the importance in protecting and educating our seniors on the potential of Fraud in the community. We have seen a drastic rise in Fraud coming from senior housing. By attending this educational event, you will learn of ways you can protect the seniors in your buildings.

We will begin the day with registration and a warm breakfast, followed by guest speakers from federal and local law enforcement agencies and Medicare providers. We are aware your time is very limited; however we do hope you will see the importance of attending this event, or sending a representative. For specific event details, please see the attached formal invitation.

Library for the Blind and Physically Handicapped

National Library Service for the Blind and Physically Handicapped (NLS)

The Library of Congress

Through a national network of cooperating libraries, NLS administers a free library program of braille and audio materials circulated to eligible borrowers in the United States by postage-free mail.

Eligibility for Service

The following persons are eligible for service:

  1. Blind persons whose visual acuity, as determined by competent authority, is 20/200 or less in the better eye with correcting lenses, or whose widest diameter of visual field subtends an angular distance no greater than 20 degrees.
  2. Other physically handicapped persons are eligible as follows:
    1. Persons whose visual disability, with correction and regardless of optical measurement, is certified by competent authority as preventing the reading of standard printed material
    2. Persons certified by competent authority as unable to read or unable to use standard printed material as a result of physical limitations.
    3. Persons certified by competent authority as having a reading disability resulting from organic dysfunction and of sufficient severity to prevent their reading printed material in a normal manner.

Certifying Authority

In cases of blindness, visual impairment, or physical limitations, “competent authority” is defined to include doctors of medicine; doctors of osteopathy; ophthalmologists; optometrists; registered nurses; therapists; and professional staff of hospitals, institutions, and public or private welfare agencies (e.g., social workers, case workers, counselors, rehabilitation teachers, and superintendents). In the absence of any of these, certification may be made by professional librarians or by any person whose competence under specific circumstances is acceptable to the Library of Congress.

In the case of reading disability from organic dysfunction, competent authority is defined as doctors of medicine and doctors of osteopathy who may consult with colleagues in associated disciplines.

Residency or U.S. Citizenship

Eligible readers must be residents of the United States, including the several states, territories, insular possessions, and the District of Columbia; or, American citizens domiciled abroad.

Lending of Materials and Classes of Borrowers

Veterans. In the lending of books, recordings, playback equipment, musical scores, instructional texts, and other specialized materials, preference shall be given at all times to the needs of the blind and other physically handicapped persons who have been honorably discharged from the armed forces of the United States.

Institutions. The reading materials and playback equipment for the use of blind and physically handicapped persons may be loaned to individuals who qualify, to institutions such as nursing homes and hospitals, and to schools for the blind or physically handicapped for the use by such persons only. The reading materials and playback equipment may also be used in public or private schools where handicapped students are enrolled; however, the students in public or private schools must be certified as eligible on an individual basis and must be the direct and only recipients of the materials and equipment.

The NSL 2012 Senior Wii Bowling Championships, sponsored and hosted by LeadingAge, was a smashing success.  The 10 week tournament featured 242 teams from 30 states and 1,241 Wii bowlers.   Champions were crowned in 30 conferences and National Champions were crowned in 6 divisions.

The 2013 NSL schedule is out.  Senior Wii bowlers will compete for state and regional championships beginning the week of Feb 11.  The tournaments run for 10 weeks and end the week of Apr 15.  The 2013 NSL Senior Wii Bowling National Championships begin the week of Aug 12 and end the week of Oct 14. LeadingAge will again be the sponsor of the NSL National Championships.

Diabetes Self-Management Training

Doreen Lawrence from MiCAFE contacted me today regarding a Diabetes Self-Management Training to be held for Medicare recipients with Diabetes.  They are looking to hold the training sessions in early 2013.  There are two locations in Detroit they are looking to hold the trainings, and transportation might be available.  Doreen indicated that right now they are really trying to get these programs scheduled so they might be ultra-accommodating on scheduling transport (particularly if buildings/coops could get a group to attend).

If you are able to link some Seniors to this training, please let me know as Doreen would like feedback.  I do not need to know names, just numbers of people attending.
