Active Aging Workshop Ideas

From Tom Wyllie:

For those of you looking for some ideas for educational programs for the month of September, you might want to consider celebrating Active Aging Week, which is the week of September 23rd through the 29th.  Active Aging Week is the International Council on Aging’s annual health promotion event. Here is a link to their web page about the event: http://www.icaa.cc/activeagingweek/resourcesaaw.htm#3   To the left of the page there is a side bar with a menu of links that will provide you with planning guides, planning worksheets, promotional ideas, promotional materials, resources & themes, and the opportunity to register the program you choose to do with the ICAA. When you click on the promotional materials link, at the bottom of your screen you should notice a section titled “Program Profiles”.  The first link under that section titled “Fun ideas from Active Aging Week” will take you to a list of suggested programs/activities that other organizations have done that you might want to review.

Another option is to consider celebrating Falls Prevention Awareness Week, which is September 22nd through September 28th (same week as Active Aging Week). Below are some links that will provide you with some planning and promotional guides along with some program ideas:

Creating Confident Caregivers

If you or someone you know is caring for someone with Alzheimer’s disease, a closed head injury, or dementia due to stroke, we want you to be aware of an excellent opportunity and empowering resource for family caregivers in southeastern Michigan. The AAA 1-B and the Alzheimer’s Association – Greater Michigan and Michigan Great Lakes Chapters are offering a FREE educational training program for family members who are caring for a person with a dementia related illness in Oakland, Macomb and Washtenaw Counties in 2012 and 2013.   More classes will be announced in January 2013.  Please see below for current locations and dates.

Download the Creating Confident Caregiver Brochure.

The Creating Confident Caregivers (CCC) training program has been proven to reduce caregiver stress by providing caregivers with useful tools and information. The CCC program is not a support group, but an opportunity to learn new information and strategies that will make the job of caregiving easier and more rewarding. Caregivers will be able to take a step back from their demands, learn about the progressiveness of the disease of dementia, how it impacts their loved one, learn strategies to manage difficult behaviors, and how to manage their own well-being.

Caregivers will learn strategies to:

  • Reduce caregiver stress
  • Improve caregiver confidence
  • Create a positive caregiving environment
  • Plan daily activities for your loved one based on their strengths
  • Deal with behaviors caused by dementia and its effects on the brain

The CCC trainings are held for two hours, once a week for six weeks (see below for training locations, dates and times). On site respite care will also be available to participants free of charge. All materials, flyers, and training books are provided by the AAA 1-B, and there is no cost for the caregiver to attend this training. The class is limited to 12 participants. Up to three members from one family can attend a training together. Caregivers should plan to attend all six sessions to get the full benefit from the program.

The Creating Confident Caregivers Program utilizes training methods from the University of Minnesota’s Savvy Caregiver Program. The CCC program is supported, in part, by the U.S. Administration on Aging through its Alzheimer’s Disease Demonstration Grants to States, the Michigan Office of Services to the Aging, the Area Agency on Aging 1-B, The Alzheimer’s Association – Greater Michigan Chapter, and the Alzheimer’s Association – Michigan Great Lakes Chapter.

Fall Prevention by Dr. Allon Goldberg

Anne Sackrison confirmed that having a Professor from WSU conduct a workshop that included an optional referral to a University-sponsored study is not solicitation. Dr. Goldberg and his students have provided numerous fall prevention activities at the Hannan Center for Senior Learning over the years, and we also feel comfortable with him and his workshops.

Maryanette’s Liaison had posed this question to Anne after Maryanette shared the workshop idea and potential concern with him:

“The service coordinators from Wyandotte are planning the September education meeting.  They have asked Dr. Allan Goldberg to speak from Wayne State University school of gerontology about fall prevention.  He asked if it would be OK to mention a study that they are currently doing on seniors, which would pay them to participate if they were interested.

I think it would be fine since its through Wayne State.  I just wanted to get your opinion on it.

Dr. Allan Goldberg’s phone number is 313-577-8608 if you have any specific questions for him.”

Thanks CSI for the input!

American Chinese Association newsletters and health screenings

Have a large Chinese population in your Co-op or Village? Check out the newsletters from ACA. They have timely health screenings and more. Sign up for their newsletter here.

There may be an option for a Chinese/Mandarin version, too…

No flu shots at CSI properties…

Due to possible liability issues, flu shot clinics are not allowed at any of the Co-ops. However…

The co-ops often shuttle members to sites for their shots, and Hannan House has a flu shot event sponsored by the DMC every fall (especially good for the Labelle members)!

If you’re looking for a health workshop, consider other, less invasive health monitoring by non-profit or governmental health care providers, including things like blood pressure.
