AMA’s Guidance on Assisting Older Adults with Driving Cessation

I attended a great presentation by Dr. Mark Ensberg at the Geriatric Education Center of Michigan. He’s a physician and the presentation discussed how the AMA directs/guides physicians on how to assess older drivers’ physical and mental capacity to drive, how to have the difficult conversation of advising/prescribing them not to drive, and how to report older drivers who are dangerous drivers.

The website includes an array of good information on what to expect (presuming your member/resident’s PCP is up to date) on support you can get from suggesting a member talk with their physician about their driving concerns.

http://www.ama-assn.org/ama/pub/physician-resources/public-health/promoting-healthy-lifestyles/geriatric-health/older-driver-safety/assessing-counseling-older-drivers.page

I’m also attaching the chapter for physicians that specifically addresses how to hold that challenging conversation with their patient about driving cessation. It includes scenarios with dialogue, resources, and pitfalls. Even though you are not physicians and will not be prescribing driving cessation, some of the conversations give the same background context a SC could give.

Finally, I’m attaching the AMA’s handouts for older drivers and their families. There are some outstanding checklists for helping older adults self assess their driving as well as tips for families/caregivers.

WSU Law Professor Speaker

Hello Everyone,

WSU Law Professor Susan Cancelosi just did a presentation on important elder law topics, from financial to medical matters. It was a great presentation. At the end of the presentation, Professor Cancelosi asked me to pass her information around to other SCs because she enjoys presenting elder law to older adults. Professor Cancelosi teaches, but does not practice law in Michigan. She is licensed in Texas and Ohio.

Professor Cancelosi can be reach at 313-577-9352 or via e-mail at scancelosi@wayne.edu.

AASC Webinar on Fair Housing

Attached is the powerpoint from the AASC Webinar on Fair Housing.

Practical Application of the Federal Fair Housing Act
Presenters: Judy Wolk, Attorney, Judith B. Wolk, LLC, Charleston, S.C.; and Dorothy Davis, Director of Service Coordination, N&H Enterprises, Decatur, Georgia
The presentation will provide an overview of the Federal Fair Housing Act and its impact on housing providers.  Particular attention will be paid to the applicability of fair housing law to persons with disabilities and how to identify and handle requests for accommodations. Understanding the often confusing “do’s and don’ts” of the Act is critical to avoiding infractions that can lead to unpleasant results and/or litigation.

The Labelle Lifeline Newsletter for May

Hi all,

I’ve attached the Labelle Lifeline Newsletter, a publication of the SCs Diane and Victoria.

As we discussed yesterday, the nuances of newsletters can be confusing, but the basic guidelines for newsletters in the CSI co-ops are:

1. SCs can produce their own newsletters highlighting issues/resources/services of the SC program. CSI has asked that you have your co-op leadership team review it at your monthly meeting (President, FCRC Chair, Education Chair and Liaison) prior to publication) to make sure that it dovetails nicely with CSI policies and procedures and just to offer a second set of eyes for proofreading. Content must be original to the SC (ie no content from members).

2. SCs should not submit content or be interviewed for the Co-op newsletter if your co-op has a newsletter. Some of your members have approached you about writing a guest column for their newsletter and CSI has requested that you respectfully decline. This publication is meant for the members and is their place to shine.

I’ve also attached Operation ABLE’s printing instructions in case you are inclined to produce a monthly, quarterly, semi annal, or annual newsletter. This is completely optional. The newsletter has been well received by Labelle members, liaison, and Sheila.

Thanks Diane and Victoria for blazing the trail.

Sincerely,

Rachel

CSI and Volunteer Translators

Hi All,

A review of the CSI/Hannan agreement on utilizing volunteer translators in the co-ops as per the questions yesterday. Yes, CSI did ammend it’s decision last year to allow you to use fellow CSI members as volunteer translators (based on your advocacy – special thanks especially to Andrea on this).

When the SC works with a translator, we request that there be two documents signed. The member must sign a written Consent to Release to share information with the translator. And the translator signs a Confidentiality Agreement, which is a good way of the SC educating the translator on the importance of confidentiality and full translation to the best of the translator’s ability. This form is  attached.

Best wishes with this challenging, and hopefully rewarding, form of communication.

Sincerely,

Rachel
