Sticking with a treatment plan for depression or bipolar disorder can be extraordinarily difficult. This issue of UPDATE explores the idea of “treatment adherence,” which is roughly defined as following the course of treatment that your health care provider has established with you, whether that treatment involves medication, therapy, lifestyle changes, managing co-occurring conditions, or combinations of these. We discuss why adherence is so important for reaching and maintaining wellness, and offer some strategies for overcoming barriers that may stand in your way.
